Kaduna, Nigeria – June 13, 2025
Bello El-Rufai, a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, has publicly apologized to former President Goodluck Jonathan for his past criticisms. The lawmaker, who is also the son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, cited youthful naivety and lack of understanding of governance as reasons for his previous remarks against the former president.
Why Bello El-Rufai Apologized to Goodluck Jonathan
Speaking during a media interaction on Thursday evening, Bello El-Rufai revealed that his moment of reflection came unexpectedly. According to him, the turning point occurred during a recent visit to his father, Nasir El-Rufai. He narrated how he observed his father preparing to visit former President Goodluck Jonathan for political consultations.
“I paid my father a visit and noticed he was going out. I asked where he was going, and he said he was going to see President Jonathan,” Bello recounted.
“I paused because, when I was naive or thought ego or gratification mattered, I used to be very active in criticizing President Jonathan.”
Bello admitted that in his younger years, he lacked the maturity to appreciate the responsibilities of leadership and the complexities of governance. He expressed genuine regret for his previous statements.
“I even forgot in my naivety, as many young people do, that we had governance then. I said, ‘please, when you see him, tell him I am very sorry, I am wiser now.’”
El-Rufai Commends Jonathan’s Statesmanship
The lawmaker went on to praise Jonathan’s legacy, particularly his peaceful concession after the 2015 general elections, which marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
“It takes a lot, particularly in Africa, to lose an election and leave. He did that.”
Bello emphasized that systemic issues in Nigeria may have clouded his judgment in the past. He now recognizes the quality of governance under Jonathan and appreciates the challenges leaders face in complex political environments like Nigeria.
A Shift in Perspective and Political Maturity
This apology from Bello El-Rufai marks a significant departure from his previously confrontational stance. The El-Rufai family, especially during the peak of Jonathan's administration, was known for its vocal opposition to his leadership. However, the younger El-Rufai now acknowledges the importance of humility, growth, and learning from past political judgments.
Historically, Nasir El-Rufai had maintained a cordial relationship with Goodluck Jonathan in the early years, even supporting his 2011 presidential bid. Tensions later developed, particularly after the emergence of Namadi Sambo as Vice President.
A Rare Moment of Political Contrition in Nigeria
Bello El-Rufai’s apology stands out as a rare show of political maturity and contrition in Nigeria’s often polarized landscape. His public acknowledgment of past mistakes, coupled with his respect for Jonathan’s democratic values, offers a fresh perspective on the evolving political discourse among Nigeria’s younger leaders.
